About
Vundabar is a Boston-based indie rock trio known for their energetic blend of jangly, fuzzed-out math rock and surf-inspired sounds infused with a post-punk edge. Formed in 2013 by Brandon Hagen (vocals, guitar) and Drew McDonald (drums) while they were still in high school, the duo expanded their lineup with bassist Zack Abramo. The band's music is characterized by its dynamic shifts from knotty folk melodies to the loud-soft-loud dynamics reminiscent of Boston's own Pixies. Over the years, Vundabar has crafted a sound that evolves with each album, from their debut Antics to the more grungy and post-punk influenced Gawk, and the introspective yet vibrant Smell Smoke.
How to Sound Like Vundabar
Vundabar's sound is a vibrant tapestry of gritty and melodic textures, often achieved through fuzz-drenched guitar tones and intricate rhythmic patterns. The use of a Way Huge Electronics Swollen Pickle MKII Jumbo Fuzz by Brandon Hagen contributes to the band's raw and powerful sonic character, while a Fender Deluxe Roadhouse Stratocaster ensures a versatile tonal palette capable of both jangly brightness and deeper, more resonant sounds. The incorporation of delay effects, such as the Boss DD-7 Digital Delay, helps create a sense of space and urgency, allowing their music to oscillate between tight, punchy riffs and expansive, atmospheric passages. This blend of fuzz, melody, and rhythmic intricacy captures the essence of Vundabar's unique indie garage rock sound.
