About
Wizzard was a British glam rock band formed by the eccentric multi-instrumentalist Roy Wood after his departure from the Electric Light Orchestra. Known for their flamboyant style and festive tracks, Wizzard emerged in 1972 and quickly captured attention with their elaborate soundscapes. The band's lineup included Roy Wood (vocals, guitar, various instruments), Rick Price (bass guitar), Charlie Grima (drums), and a host of others who contributed to the brass and woodwind sections, creating a distinctive, full-bodied sound. Their music, a blend of glam rock, classic UK pop, and Christmas themes, was marked by its playful and exuberant energy, with hits like "See My Baby Jive" and the perennial "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day."
How to Sound Like Wizzard
Wizzard's sonic palette is characterized by its rich, dense layers and orchestral arrangements, reminiscent of Phil Spector's Wall of Sound. Their music is both melodic and dynamic, featuring a mix of rock and orchestral elements that create a festive and sometimes chaotic atmosphere. This vibrant sound was crafted using a variety of guitars, including the Fender Jaguar and Gibson ES-335, which provided the necessary versatility and depth. The use of brass and woodwind instruments added a unique texture, while the rhythm section maintained a driving, upbeat tempo. Effects such as reverb and modulation were likely employed to enhance the grandeur and theatricality of their music, capturing the joyful and sometimes whimsical spirit that defined Wizzard's sound.
