About
Wovenwar is an American metal band originating from the remnants of the acclaimed metalcore group As I Lay Dying. Formed in 2013 in San Diego, the ensemble comprises Nick Hipa (guitar), Phil Sgrosso (guitar until his departure), Josh Gilbert (bass), Jordan Mancino (drums), and Shane Blay (lead vocals, guitar). With roots in metalcore, heavy metal, and hard rock, Wovenwar sets itself apart by embracing a more melodic approach, favoring clean vocals over the traditional screamo style of their predecessor. This shift in sound has allowed them to explore the melodic edges of the metalcore spectrum while still delivering the heavy, intricate riffs that fans expect.
How to Sound Like Wovenwar
Wovenwar's sound is characterized by aggressive yet melodic guitar work and a polished, dynamic production. Their music often features tight, rhythmic riffs interwoven with melodic lead lines, creating a balance that appeals to both metal purists and those craving melody. The Ibanez ART 520 and Ibanez Iceman Electric Guitars used by Nick Hipa contribute to their powerful, clear sound, cutting through the mix with precision. Amplification through the Diezel VH4 100W Tube Guitar Head Amp adds a distinct, high-gain warmth that complements the heavy rhythms. Bassist Josh Gilbert's use of a PRS SE Kestrel Bass ensures a robust, defined low end, anchoring the complex guitar arrangements. This blend of melody and metal intensity is further enhanced by the precise, driving beats from Jordan Mancino, creating a cohesive, energetic soundscape.
