Zozobra Members, Gear & Sound

Zozobra is an experimental stoner metal band with roots in the influential band Old Man Gloom. Formed in 2006, Zozobra began as a solo project by Caleb Scofield (bass, vocals) after the breakup of his other band, Cave In. The lineup eventually expanded to include Santos Montano (drums), with additional touring support from guitarists Adam McGrath and Jim Carroll. Known for their heavy, dense soundscapes, Zozobra's music navigates the realms of doom metal, stoner rock, sludge metal, and post-metal, drawing listeners into a world of aggressive rhythms and haunting atmospheres.

Zozobra's sonic character is defined by its thick, distorted bass lines and aggressive rhythmic drive, creating a visceral, immersive experience. The bass, wielded by Caleb Scofield, often employs the gritty tones of a Gibson Grabber or Fender Precision Bass, amplified through robust setups like the Ampeg SVT-VR and Marshall VBA400 Head, paired with cabinets such as the Ampeg SVT-810E 8x10. These elements combine to form a crushing low end, complemented by the pummeling, dynamic drumming that drives their sound. Effects like the Boss ODB-3 Bass OverDrive add a layer of gritty texture, enhancing the aggressive yet methodical nature of their compositions. Zozobra's music thrives on this fusion of dense, atmospheric textures and raw power, making it a captivating force in the realm of heavy music.
