Synester Gates Guitar School

I have never been able to benefit from instruction past the basics of chord forms and pentatonic box patterns. I think playing is a bit like driving. You can learn the basics in an empty parking lot but you gain skill by driving in traffic, or in music by playing with others, even if it's playing along with a youtube video.

I changed the tubes, looked for loose connections, etc., had no luck. Years ago I had a shorting problem with my Crate VC 60 210 combo and brought it to an authorized repair center. It was returned with the same problem. Sent it to St. Louis for a factory repair, was returned with the same problem. Sent it to St. Louis a second time and the engineers looked at it and fixed it. Trying to get the Super 60 repaired seemed like too much trouble.

Most of what I do is just direct recording into the Zoom R16, so I don't use the amps that much. Seeing the used rack head for $250 + $50 tax and shipping was too good to pass up.

I bought a second speaker connector on ebay and connected the head to the 12" Fender speaker and to the 2 10" Crate speakers in the Crate VC60, using both combos as just cabs for the Super 60 head. Great sound.

P.S. The Formatting Help (in blue) link below the editing window, just says adding the url will embed the photo. I figured it out. The pic has to be less than 400MB. I resized it in Photoshop and now it embeds.

I was going to swap the round knob that came with the head with one of the Fender chicken knobs on the combo, but the stem is off by about 100 degrees, so the chicken knob pointer won't line up properly, so I didn't use it. Maybe that's why they used the round knob instead, or maybe they just didn't have a Fender knob.

Still have it. Bought the Fender Super60 used for $350 about 30 years ago. Replaced the grill cloth and added locking wheels. When the pre amp section died a couple of years ago I used it as a power amp, with a pedal board or a small tube amp as the preamp. Last month I saw a used Super60 rack head for $300 on the Guitar Center website and bought it. I just use the combo as a 12" speaker cab now. Needed to find a speaker connector (got it on ebay) with 2 female spade connectors on one end to connect to the 12" speaker, and a female 1/4" connector on the other end to connect to the head with a speaker cable.

new cover, let me know how did I do?

By and large we are mostly hobbyists here and on all the forums. We will never be headliners, most will never get paid enough to cover the money they put into their music. Most will never be more than mediocre by professional standards. Most of the greats were headlining by their early 20's. It's not something they learned in books, they just had it. People can just tell when someone is great, and for most people, anything less sucks. But most people in the world can't sing while playing an instrument and post it online. So good or bad, we are still part of a fairly small and select group of amateurs. The day job is what pays the bills. Many a headlining pro from the 60's had lifetime earnings less than a manager at McDonalds. Joe Walsh was broke at one time. After Janis, where were Big Brother and the Holding Company? Greats like Bobby Hatfield and Louis Armstrong had to stay on the road playing small gigs until they died.

sure is, you have to pretend you're a mmidwesterner pretending he's in the clash.. and you have to hit your guitar so ahrd that wood chips fly off it every few beats!

It's more the range of notes and the ranges in volume on just about every phrase. I've never heard of anyone who did a very good cover of Greenday. Very few have covered the Stones well either.

I've never had a blackface, but it sounds awesome with a Super60 and even plugged directly into a Zoom R16 recorder...if you like the sound of clean tremolo (think Chris Isaaks video of Wicked Game).

Green day songs are not easy to cover. Here's my attempt to cover Greenday.

My only pedal is the ZCAT tremolo/vibrato pedal, $173 with shipping. Has a beautiful clean tremolo sound, like on a Fender tube amp. They are at http://www.zcatpedals.com/?dir=view&id=tremolo They are handmade in Lithuania and you can use Paypal to insure your purchase is as advertised. Had mine for a couple of years now, use it all the time.

I don't think you are hitting the high notes.

What string gauges does everyone use?

Ernie Ball Extra Slinky 8-38 on Alvarez Jumbo acoustic and Fender Telecaster and Giannini electric guitars. Easy on the fingers. Use a zcat tremolo pedal on the electrics to fatten the sound.

How did I sing?

Please help me improve my singing skills by your suggestions...thanks :)

I really like your song and video from the Winter fest. I have listened to your other songs posted and this is by far the best as far as I'm concerned. Great energy and enthusiasm in your singing and playing. I don't know what the lyrics mean but the way you sing them makes me feel good. The only suggestion I have is your voice sounds a bit weak which I think you could fix with maybe a condenser mic which will project your voice better. Also some EQ in post editing of the soundtrack and a bit of echo will give you a more powerful sound.
