ADR, short for Audio & Design (Recording) Ltd and now trading as Audio Design Reading, is a British professional audio manufacturer based in Reading, Berkshire. The company built its reputation from the early 1970s onward with a range of transistor-based dynamics processors that became studio and broadcast staples worldwide, and is often credited as one of the first manufacturers to commercialize FET-based limiter amplifiers in the late 1960s.
ADR is best known for the F760X-RS Compex, a compressor, limiter and expander/gate that saw heavy use on vocals, pianos, drums and mix-bus duties in hundreds of studios through the 1970s and '80s. Other notable units include the F769X-R Vocal Stresser, the Gemini Easy Rider stereo compressor/limiter, and the SCAMP (Standardised Compatible Audio Modular Package) rack system, a modular processor format frequently cited as a conceptual forerunner of today's 500-series lunchbox ecosystem.
From the mid-1980s the company expanded into digital interface products and has since focused much of its manufacturing on professional DAB broadcast receivers, though its vintage analog processors remain sought after on the used market and are regularly serviced and refurbished by pro-audio specialists.
