Ampeg is an American musical instrument amplifier manufacturer founded in 1946 by Everett Hull and Stanley Michaels as Michaels-Hull Electronic Labs. The company name comes from Hull's "Amplified Peg," a microphone pickup mounted on the end-pin of an upright bass. Hull became the sole proprietor in 1949 and renamed the business the Ampeg Bassamp Company. Though the brand has made guitar amplifiers, electric upright basses, and even solid-body guitars over the years, it is most closely associated with bass amplification.
The company's signature product is the SVT (Super Vacuum Tube), a 300-watt all-tube bass head introduced in 1969 and designed by Bill Hughes and Roger Cox with input from Dan Armstrong. Paired with 8x10 cabinets, the SVT became a staple of large-venue bass rigs and remains in production in various reissues. Other notable designs include the B-15 Portaflex, a flip-top combo created by engineer Jess Oliver in 1960 that became a studio standard, along with ongoing lines such as the Heritage, Classic, Portaflex, Micro, Venture, and Rocket Bass series, plus SGT-DI preamp pedals and the SVT Suite plugin.
Ampeg changed hands several times after Hull sold the company in the late 1960s, passing through Magnavox, MTI, St. Louis Music, and LOUD Technologies before being acquired by Yamaha Guitar Group in 2018, placing it alongside Line 6 and Yamaha's guitar and bass divisions.
