Barnes & Mullins is a British musical instrument company founded in 1895 in Bournemouth by Albert Mullins and S. Bowley Barnes, two years after the pair launched their musical instrument journals The Jo and The Troubadour. The company began as a banjo specialist, manufacturing its own instruments and importing others, before relocating to London in 1900 and eventually to Oswestry in Shropshire, near the English-Welsh border, where it remains headquartered.
Under its own name, Barnes & Mullins produces folk and acoustic instruments including 4-, 5- and 6-string banjos, banjo ukuleles, concert, tenor, soprano and bass ukuleles, A-style and F-style mandolins, and resonator guitars. Models such as the BJ500M "Troubadour" resonator banjo and the BMUK series of ukuleles are typical of the own-brand range, which is aimed at beginner to intermediate players.
Alongside its in-house manufacturing, the company operates one of the UK's longer-established musical instrument distribution businesses, handling the UK and Ireland trade for brands including Faith Guitars, Admira, Höfner, Yanagisawa saxophones, Vandoren reeds, Thomastik-Infeld strings, and Hidersine. Brian Cleary, who took sole ownership in 2021 after joining with Bruce Perrin to buy the company in 2009, leads the business.
