BASSBOSS is an Austin, Texas-based manufacturer of professional powered loudspeakers and subwoofers. The company was founded in 1999 by Johan van Zyl and designer David Lee, who previously partnered under the names Rhino Acoustics and BASSMAXX before adopting the BASSBOSS brand. Lee, who began his audio career at 19 in high-fidelity home and car audio, spent the mid-1980s designing and installing hundreds of nightclub sound systems, cultivating a vision of hi-fi clarity at club-scale volume. Van Zyl, originally from South Africa, had been designing sub horn loudspeakers since 1988.
