Founded in 1932 by Albert Bergerault in Ligueil, France, Bergerault holds the distinction of being the first manufacturer of xylophones in France. The company's origin story is remarkable: during World War II, Albert crafted a xylophone while imprisoned at Stalag VIII C in Poland, performing for fellow prisoners before resuming full-scale production after the war. Designated a "Living Heritage Company" by the French government and included in UNESCO's "Rare Craft Professions" registry, the company remains rooted in artisanal craftsmanship across three generations of family leadership.

Bergerault is best known for its concert and orchestral mallet percussion — vibraphones, marimbas, xylophones, glockenspiels, and timpani. The company has a history of innovation, including the creation of the first four-octave vibraphone in 1966 for the ORTF orchestra, the first glockenspiel with a pedal dampener for the Percussions de Strasbourg, and the first bass marimba built for marimbist Alain Londeix. Their educational Orff instruments are distributed exclusively in North America through Peripole under the Peripole-Bergerault brand.

Bergerault instruments are used by many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Paris Opera, Bolshoi Theatre, and Mariinsky Theatre. Endorsing artists include jazz vibraphonist Jerry Tachoir, marimba soloist Daniel Berg, and Mark Ford, Coordinator of Percussion at the University of North Texas. In the United States, Bergerault's concert and marching percussion lines are distributed exclusively through TAMA.
