Blonder Tongue Laboratories was founded in 1950 by engineers Isaac "Ike" Blonder and Ben Tongue, who met after World War II while working at the Panoramic Radio Corporation in Manhattan. Based in New Jersey, the company built its reputation on RF and broadband amplification — fixed-tuned broadband boosters, UHF converters, and signal distribution equipment that became mainstays of early cable television and MATV systems. Both founders were prolific inventors and were later inducted into the New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame.

Within music gear circles, Blonder Tongue is best known for a single, influential detour into pro audio: the Audio Baton Model B-9B, an all-tube single-channel graphic equalizer introduced in 1959. The B-9B was among the first graphic EQs to abandon hand-wound inductors, instead using patented gyrator circuits built around 12AX7 tubes to simulate the tank circuits of traditional designs. That design is widely cited as an ancestor of the modern analog graphic equalizer and has given the unit cult status among engineers and collectors.

Original B-9B units regularly turn up on the vintage market, and the Audio Baton was famously central enough to indie band Swirlies' 1993 debut that the album was named after it. Antelope Audio later modeled the Audio Baton as a plugin for its Synergy Core platform, extending the unit's reach well beyond the small number of surviving hardware examples.
