Buffet Crampon is a French manufacturer of wind instruments founded in Paris in 1825 by Denis Buffet-Auger, with the joint name established in 1836 when his son Jean-Louis Buffet married Zoé Crampon. Headquartered in Mantes-la-Ville since 1850, the company is the world's leading producer of Boehm-system clarinets and is most closely associated with professional woodwinds crafted from African blackwood (grenadilla).
The brand's flagship is the R13 Bb clarinet, designed by acoustician Robert Carrée in 1955, which became the dominant professional clarinet in the United States and spawned variants including the R13 Festival, Prestige, and Greenline — the last introduced in 1994 using a composite of blackwood powder and epoxy resin to resist cracking. Other well-known lines include the student E11 and E12F, the intermediate E13, and the Tosca, Divine, and Légende professional models. Buffet Crampon also makes bass, alto, Eb, and contrabass clarinets, and manufactures oboes, English horns, bassoons, and saxophones.
Beyond the core Buffet Crampon line, the company operates a group of wind-instrument brands including Schreiber, W. Schreiber, Keilwerth (saxophones), B&S, Hans Hoyer, J. Scherzer, and Melton Meinl Weston (brass). The R13 has been played by numerous jazz and classical clarinetists, including Ken Peplowski and Anat Cohen.
