Bundy is an American student instrument brand historically associated with Selmer USA. Named after George M. Bundy, a designer who ran the U.S. branch of Selmer from the 1920s through the 1940s, the line began as a budget-priced range of stencil instruments before Selmer started producing Bundy-branded horns in-house after World War II. The brand became a fixture in North American school band programs, known for durable, affordable woodwinds aimed at beginning and intermediate players.
The best-known Bundy product is the Resonite 1400 clarinet, a molded-plastic student clarinet introduced in 1948 and modeled loosely on the Selmer Paris BT. It sold more than a million units by the late 1970s and became one of the most widely used beginner clarinets in the United States. The Bundy catalog also included student saxophones (alto and tenor), flutes, piccolos, trumpets, and other band-room staples, often sold under the Selmer Bundy co-branding.
Domestic production under the Bundy name wound down after Selmer's merger with Conn in the late 1990s, with student woodwinds and brasswinds rebranded under the Selmer USA and Bach labels. Vintage Bundy clarinets and saxophones remain common on the used market and are still widely circulated among school rental fleets and repair shops.
