The line consisted primarily of entry-level to mid-tier copies of American designs, including Stratocaster-style electrics and Precision Bass-style instruments, sourced from the same Japanese factories — likely in Hamamatsu or Osaka — that supplied many of the era's better-known import brands.

In the United Kingdom, Craftsman instruments were distributed by Sola Sound Ltd. and reviewed favorably in the period press for offering strong build quality at a low price point, with In Tune magazine in 1985 calling the Strat-style guitar one of the best values of its type. Owners of surviving examples often single out the necks as well-crafted for a budget instrument, and the guitars have developed a modest following on the vintage Japanese MIJ market.
