Dave Guardala is a saxophone mouthpiece maker that emerged from a workshop on Long Island, New York in the 1980s. Founded by craftsman Dave Guardala, the brand built its reputation on hand-finished metal mouthpieces designed for high-volume, high-projection playing in jazz, fusion, R&B and pop contexts. Guardala became closely associated with Michael Brecker, and the MBI and MBII models — replicas of the mouthpiece Guardala built for Brecker — remain among the most recognized designs in the catalog.
The core lineup centers on tenor, alto, soprano and baritone metal mouthpieces machined from brass and offered in silver- or gold-plated finishes. Long-running models include the MBI and MBII, the King (voiced after the King Curtis sound with a high baffle and small chamber), the Super King, the Studio, the Crescent and the FatBoy. The brand also briefly extended into saxophones themselves, produced in partnership with Vogtländische Musikinstrumentenfabrik (VMI) in Markneukirchen, Germany during the 1990s.
Production of Guardala-branded mouthpieces is now handled in Germany by Nadir Ibrahimoglu, a longtime workshop collaborator who acquired the rights and continues the laser-trimmed, hand-finished build process associated with the original pieces. The mouthpieces are sold through specialist saxophone retailers worldwide and remain a fixture among players seeking the bright, cutting tone the brand is known for.
