Decca is a guitar brand that originated in the mid-1960s as part of Decca Home Entertainment Products, a division of the American Decca Records label. Following the Beatles-era boom in guitar demand, Decca began importing inexpensive Japanese-made acoustic and electric guitars aimed at beginners, distributing them through department stores, mail-order catalogs like Sears Roebuck, and small music shops. The instruments were built by Japanese factories — early models came from Teisco, with later production shifting to Kawai around 1969 — and most retailed for under $100.
The lineup ran from budget dreadnought and parlor acoustics to solid-body and hollow-body electrics, alongside small amplifiers and accessories. The DMI series of hollow-body electrics is among the more recognizable, including the single-pickup DMI 500, dual-pickup DMI 501, and triple-pickup DMI 502. Models from this era are characterized by quirky body shapes, gold-foil-style pickups (a Teisco hallmark), and unusual switching arrangements that have become part of their visual identity.
Production wound down by the 1970s, but Decca instruments developed a following among collectors and players of vintage Japanese guitars, valued for their offbeat looks and lo-fi character rather than refined construction. The hollow-body electrics and oddball solid-bodies tend to be the most sought after on the used market.
