Dytronics is a boutique American effects manufacturer founded by Chuck Monte, the engineer behind the Dyno-My-Piano Fender Rhodes modification service that started in 1974. Operating primarily through the 1980s, Dytronics built a small catalog of hand-assembled analog rack processors aimed at the Los Angeles studio scene, and the same designs circulated under several closely related brand names including Dyno-My-Piano and Songbird.
The company is best known for the CS-5 Tri-Stereo Chorus, a three-voice analog chorus and splitter that grew out of Monte's work voicing modded Rhodes pianos and became a defining sound of polished 1980s pop, rock, and session guitar. The same circuit was also sold as the Dyno-My-Piano TSC-618 and the Songbird TSC-1380. Dytronics also produced the FS-1 Cyclosonic Panner, a 24-stage phase-shifting auto-panner issued in very small numbers, and related outboard. Original hardware is scarce and commands high prices on the used market.
The CS-5 was favored by Los Angeles session guitarists including Michael Landau, Steve Lukather, and Dann Huff, and the designs have been officially emulated in software by Universal Audio and Softube as the UAD Dytronics Tri-Stereo Chorus and Cyclosonic Panner plugins.
