ELAC is a German loudspeaker and audio electronics manufacturer founded in 1926 in Kiel as Electroacustic GmbH. Originally focused on sonar and underwater acoustics research, the company expanded into consumer audio after World War II, introducing its PW1 record player in 1948 and becoming one of Europe's leading turntable makers through the late 1950s. In 1957 it patented a stereophonic phono cartridge design that became foundational to modern moving-magnet cartridge technology.
Today ELAC is best known for its loudspeakers, ranging from the budget Debut series — designed in collaboration with speaker engineer Andrew Jones — to higher-end lines such as Uni-Fi, Carina, Vela, Concentro, and the flagship Solano models. Two proprietary drivers define much of the brand's identity: the 4Pi omnidirectional tweeter introduced in 1985, and the JET folded-ribbon tweeter introduced in 1993, which continues to appear across its upper-tier models. The company also produces turntables, subwoofers, and electronics including integrated amplifiers and phono stages.
