Exotic States is a Portland, Oregon–based virtual instrument developer founded by composer Jeremiah Pena in 2016. The company designs sample libraries and Kontakt instruments aimed at film, game, and cinematic music composers, with a focus on capturing unconventional acoustic sources and shaping them into expressive playable tools.

Its flagship offering is the Photosynthesis Engine, a free Kontakt front-end that combines sound-shaping, filters, an effects rack, and a step sequencer with LFOs for filter, gain, pan, and pitch. The engine powers Exotic States' own Photosynthesis library series — Vol 1: Sphere, Vol 2: Mystic, Vol 3: Embers, and Vol 4: Realms — which range from ambient pads and otherworldly cellos to bowed metallic textures. The company has also released Nailstrom, a deeply sampled cigar box guitar capturing the instrument's quirks and overtones.

The Photosynthesis libraries have been co-distributed and bundled with Audio Imperia, and the Photosynthesis Engine is open and free to redistribute, so it has also been used as a delivery format by other developers including Soundethers.
