F.E. Olds is an American musical instrument manufacturer with roots tracing back to 1908, when Frank Ellsworth Olds began building trombones in Los Angeles after operating a bicycle shop and electroplating business. Olds patented early trombone designs in 1912 and the company expanded under his son R.B. Olds in the 1920s, later issuing its first catalog in 1925 and adopting the well-known "Golden Bear" engraving on bell flares. After Frank's death in 1928, the company moved to Fullerton, California, and following its acquisition by Chicago Musical Instruments after World War II, designer Foster Reynolds joined and helped expand the lineup with the Ambassador series of trumpets, cornets, and trombones introduced in 1948.
Through the mid-twentieth century, Olds became one of the most prolific American brass makers, producing student, intermediate, and professional horns including the Ambassador, Recording, Mendez, Special, Studio, and Super models, alongside trombones such as the Opera and Super Olds. The original Fullerton operation ceased in 1979, and the Olds name was later revived under a company based in Mountainside, New Jersey, which produces brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments under the F.E. Olds banner.
The revived catalog spans trumpets, cornets, trombones, baritone horns, euphoniums, French horns, and tubas, along with flutes, piccolos, clarinets, oboes, and saxophones. Vintage Fullerton-era Olds horns retain a strong following among collectors and players in jazz, classical, and marching contexts, with the Ambassador in particular remaining a widely recognized student model from that era.
