Farmer Foot Drums is a maker of foot-operated acoustic percussion instruments based in Cedar, Michigan. Founded in 2006 by Pete and Kate Farmer, the company grew out of designs Pete sketched in 2003 while listening to John Lee Hooker in his wood shop, looking for a richer alternative to a one-person performer's toe-tap. After operating for several years out of a small rented garage in Washington State, the family relocated the business to Northern Michigan in 2014, where instruments are built to order in small batches.
The product line is centered on stompbox-style percussion intended to let solo guitarists, harmonica players, and one-person bands self-accompany. Flagship offerings include the FootDrum Kit, a multi-pedal acoustic kit playable entirely with two feet that combines a bass drum, snare, hi-hats, jingle, and shaker; the DownBeat, a low-profile single-pedal accompaniment built around a magnetic-spring return; the FourPedal Kit; and the BackBeat, a backpack-portable kit. The company also produces the SideNote and Gecko harmonica holders. Components are made in-house and supplemented by parts from Aquarian, Vic Firth, DW, Sabian, Nordic Drum Shells, and Seydel.
Farmer Foot Drums has carved out a niche among street performers, blues and roots musicians, and looping-based solo artists. Adopters have included Cam Cole, blues harmonica player and academic Adam Gussow, and Australian roots performer Minnie Marks.
