Firstman was a Japanese musical instrument manufacturer founded in 1972 by Kazuo Morioka, operating alongside the related brand name Hillwood. The company specialized in analog synthesizers, electronic organs, and effects during the late 1970s and early 1980s, a period when Japanese makers were supplying designs and hardware to overseas distributors. Hillwood notably built instruments for the American brand Multivox from roughly 1976 to 1980.
The catalog included the SQ-01, a monophonic synthesizer-and-sequencer combination released in 1980 whose bassline functionality drew later comparisons to the Roland TB-303, along with the FS-4V four-voice analog polysynth with SSM filters, the FP-1300 combo organ/synthesizer, the FP-888 preset keyboard, the BS-01 CV/Gate bass pedal controller, and the RT-3 stereo rotary effect pedal. Morioka went on to work at Akai in the early 1980s, and Firstman's vintage units have since become collector items in the Japanese analog synth market.
