FolkRoots is a line of mountain dulcimers with roots tracing back to 1969, when brothers Howard and Michael Rugg founded CapriTaurus Dulcimers in Felton, California. The FolkRoots name emerged from the subsequent partnership of Rugg, Rugg & Jackel (later Rugg & Jackel), built around a plywood-body design that evolved into the larger California-style body the line became known for. This bigger body is credited with giving the instruments a mellow, guitar-like tone that distinguishes them from more traditional hourglass-shaped Appalachian dulcimers.
In 1989, Howard Rugg and Steve Jackel retired from building and sold the FolkRoots line to Folkcraft Instruments, which relocated the tooling, wood stock, and inventory from California to Connecticut and later to Woodburn, Indiana. Under Folkcraft, FolkRoots continues as one of several dulcimer lines, alongside the Folkcraft and DulciVox series.
The FolkRoots catalog centers on the D Series and H Series mountain dulcimers, offered in a range of tonewood combinations including poplar, mahogany, and spruce tops. Customers can configure their own instruments through Folkcraft's "Design Your Own" program. Instruments are handmade in the USA, and individual luthier names — including members of the Ash family who run Folkcraft — are typically credited on recent builds.
