Founded in 1949 by Hugo Fox, who served as principal bassoonist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra from 1922 to 1949, the company was conceived around the idea of producing world-class bassoons in the United States rather than importing them from Europe. Fox began building bassoons in his hometown after retiring from the orchestra, and the operation has remained in the same Indiana location ever since.

The company is best known for its bassoons and contrabassoons, including the professional Model 601 and the Renard student and intermediate series, but it also produces oboes, English horns, and clarinets.
