Gene Baker is an American luthier based in Tehachapi, California, with a career spanning decades in the guitar-building world. He grew up in Detroit, Michigan, attended the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT) in Hollywood, and trained under Roger Giffin at the Gibson West Custom Shop in Los Angeles starting in 1991. In 1993 he joined the Fender Custom Shop in Corona, California, where he rose to the rank of Senior Master Builder, working alongside builders such as John English, John Suhr, and Todd Krause. During his Fender tenure he built instruments for artists including Robben Ford and Ronnie Montrose.

After leaving Fender in 1999, Baker co-founded Baker Guitars with fellow master builder Gil Vasquez, producing high-end electric guitars until 2003. He then launched b3 Guitars under his company BakerBuilt Custom Instruments Inc., building fully custom instruments by hand in his Tehachapi shop. The b3 lineup draws on a naming scheme inspired by the Chinese Wu Xing cycle — Earth, Fire, Metal, Water, and Wood — along with models like the SL, Phoenix, UltraModern, Ringmaster, and Telstar. The Fire model originated as a Robben Ford signature design. From 2009 to 2016, Baker also served as master builder and chief engineer for the Premier Builders Guild (PBG), overseeing team-built production of designs from boutique brands including Dennis Fano, Roger Giffin, Saul Koll, Johan Gustavsson, and Jason Schroeder.
