genoQs Machines is a German boutique manufacturer of hardware MIDI sequencers, founded in 2005 in Stuttgart by Marcel Achim and Gabriel Seher. The company built a cult following among electronic and experimental musicians for instruments that prize tactile, screen-free workflow over menu-diving — favoring grids of buttons, endless encoders and LED matrices as the primary interface.
The flagship product is the Octopus, a hand-assembled step sequencer housed in lacquered wood that pairs 258 push-buttons and 21 endless encoders with a red/green/yellow LED grid. Each Octopus can hold up to 144 pages with up to 10 tracks of 16 steps, and has been offered in variants including the Legacy, New Classic, Lion Head, Shell flight-case build, and limited Black Sea, Vampire and Diva editions. Its smaller sibling, the Nemo, distills much of the Octopus's design — polyphonic steps, cross- and self-modulation, freely editable scales and directions — into a more compact MIDI performance sequencer.
After formal sales wound down around the early 2010s, genoQs released the operating system as open source, and firmware updates have since been driven by a small community of power users coordinating through the company's forum. The instruments are no longer in production but remain sought after on the used market, where they typically appear on Reverb and gear forums such as Gearspace and Elektronauts.
Genoqs has 2 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Audio Sequencers. Their gear is featured by 4 artists, with the strongest followings in Electronic and Rock. Notable users include Deadmau5, Anyma, and Front 242.
