The line originated through Rose Morris, the UK instrument distributor associated with Vox and Marshall, which set up an Australian arm in response to post-war import tariffs. Through the 1960s and into the 1970s, Goldentone became one of the largest domestic producers of valve amplifiers, with combos and heads turning up on stages across the Australian surf, rock, and garage scenes. The amps are remembered for an idiosyncratic approach to circuit design — including the use of inexpensive 6DQ6 television sweep tubes — that yielded a sound often described as drawing on Fender-style cleans alongside Vox-style tremolo, with a notably full low end.
