Goodall Guitars is a family-run builder of custom hand-built acoustic guitars founded by James Goodall in 1972. James started out shaping surfboards in Spring Valley, California before turning to lutherie, and over the decades the shop has moved from California to Mendocino, then to Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii, back to Fort Bragg, California, and eventually to its present home in Sparta, Tennessee. James now builds alongside his son Luke, who has been working full-time at the bench since 2004, while Jean Goodall has run the business side since 1982.
Each instrument is custom-spec'd for its buyer, with more than thirty tonewood species available and five series stylings ranging from understated to highly ornate. The lineup spans thirteen body shapes including Parlor, Grand Concert, Traditional OM, Concert Jumbo, Standard Dreadnought, and Jumbo, plus Classical, Baritone, and twelve-string configurations. Goodall guitars are known among fingerstyle and steel-string players for clear, balanced tone and clean, refined appointments rather than flashy ornamentation.
Goodall has 3 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Steel-string Acoustic Guitars and Acoustic-Electric Guitars. Their gear is featured by 2 artists, with the strongest followings in Pop, Electronic, and Rock. Notable users include Seal and Sungha Jung.
