Hatsune Miku is a singing voice synthesizer voicebank and virtual character developed by Crypton Future Media, a music technology company based in Sapporo, Japan. Released on August 31, 2007 under the product code CV01, the voicebank was built on Yamaha's Vocaloid 2 engine using vocal samples recorded by Japanese voice actress Saki Fujita. Successive versions have been issued for the Vocaloid 3, 4, and 6 engines, and the package has shipped with Crypton's own Piapro Studio editor, a standalone DAW plugin that lets producers write melodies and lyrics for Miku to perform.

The product is sold as a software instrument for music production and is supported by separate Japanese, English, and Mandarin Chinese voicebanks. Crypton also released Hatsune Miku NT, a redesigned voice library based on a new in-house synthesis engine independent of Vocaloid. The character — depicted as a sixteen-year-old with long turquoise twin-tails — has become the most recognizable voicebank in the Vocaloid catalog, and Crypton operates the companion Piapro platform where producers and illustrators share derivative works under a shared usage license.

Music created with the Hatsune Miku voicebank spans amateur uploads on platforms such as Niconico and YouTube to commercially released tracks by producers including kz (livetune), DECO*27, Mitchie M, wowaka, and Hachi (later known as Kenshi Yonezu). Miku has also performed as a real-time 3D projection at the touring HATSUNE MIKU EXPO concert series and as an opening act on Lady Gaga's ARTPOP Ball tour.
