Heathkit is an American electronics brand best known for the do-it-yourself kits it sold from 1947 onward, allowing hobbyists to assemble their own test equipment, ham radios, hi-fi gear, televisions, and early personal computers. Founded as the Heath Company (originally an aircraft maker dating back to 1911), the firm pivoted to electronics under Howard Anthony after World War II using surplus wartime parts, and built its reputation on famously thorough, step-by-step assembly manuals backed by the slogan "We won't let you fail."
In the music world, Heathkit is remembered for a small line of solid-state guitar and bass amplifier kits sold in the late 1960s and early 1970s, including the TA-16 Starmaker 2x12 combo, the TA-17 amplifier head with matching TA-17-1 speaker cabinet, the TA-27 guitar amp, and the TA-38 bass amplifier. The company also offered hi-fi separates — integrated amplifiers, tube and solid-state power amps, tuners, and speaker kits — that found a following among home audio enthusiasts. Sunn Amplifiers reportedly traces part of its origin story to early cabinets paired with Heathkit-built amp electronics.
Heath ceased its kit business in 1992 as solid-state integration and offshore manufacturing eroded the cost advantage of self-assembly, and after several ownership changes the brand was revived to sell a smaller catalog of kits, parts, and educational electronics products. Vintage Heathkit amps, tube hi-fi gear, and ham radio equipment continue to circulate on the used market and remain popular subjects for restoration.
Heathkit has 2 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Fuzz Effects Pedals and Combo Guitar Amplifiers.
