Frederick L. Hemke reeds are a line of saxophone reeds named for the late American classical saxophonist and Northwestern University professor Frederick L. Hemke (1935–2019), widely regarded as one of the most influential saxophone educators in the United States. The reeds were first produced by Rico in 1982 and are now manufactured and distributed by D'Addario, which acquired Rico's woodwind business. They are made in alto, tenor, baritone, and soprano cuts and are sold in standard half-strength increments.
Hemke reeds are recognized by their filed cut, thinner tip, and shorter vamp, a profile designed to produce a warm, dark, focused tone with easy response. They have a long association with classical and traditional jazz saxophone playing, and are commonly recommended in conservatory and university classical saxophone programs in addition to being used by working jazz and concert-band players. The line is positioned alongside D'Addario's Royal, Rico, La Voz, and Reserve reed families within the broader D'Addario Woodwinds catalog.
