Hering is a Brazilian harmonica manufacturer founded in August 1923 by German immigrant Alfred Hering in the city of Blumenau, in southern Brazil. Originally known as Gaitas Alfred Hering, the company began exporting internationally in 1940, including a contract to supply harmonicas to the U.S. Army. In 1960 the brand was acquired by German harmonica maker Hohner, which expanded its reach in the United States, before Hohner ended its Brazilian operations in the 1970s. Brazilian investors reassumed control of Hering in 1996, and SHG Indústria, led by Horst Schreiber, took ownership in 2017.
The company is best known for its diatonic and chromatic harmonicas built around traditional construction methods, including pressure-sealed wooden combs and thick brass reed plates. Flagship products include the Vintage Harp 1923 (model 1020) diatonic, set up with old-style "Just" tuning and offered in standard and special low/high keys, as well as the Vintage Blues 40 diatonic, the Vintage 40 Chromatic (1040) and the Chromatic 48 (5148). Hering also produces the small Tico-Tico toy harmonica and a long-running Seductora model, both of which have entered the Smithsonian's collections.
Within the harmonica community, Hering occupies a niche as one of the few major harmonica makers based outside Germany and Asia, and is often cited alongside Hohner, Seydel and Suzuki as a heritage manufacturer. The brand is distributed in North America through Kelley Distribution and sold through retailers such as Guitar Center, with a player base that skews toward blues and folk traditions where tongue-block technique and warm wooden-comb tone are valued.
