Irwin Guitars is the workshop of American luthier Doug Irwin, best known for designing and building the five custom electric guitars that became inseparable from Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead: Eagle, Wolf, Tiger, Rosebud, and Wolf Jr. Beginning with the Eagle in 1972 and continuing through the early 1990s, Irwin's instruments for Garcia helped define the visual and sonic language of the Grateful Dead's live sound, with features like elaborate inlay work, exotic tonewoods, onboard effects loops, and unified grounding systems aimed at quieter performance on stage.

Beyond the Garcia commissions, Irwin has built a small catalog of numbered custom guitars and basses, including early pieces like the #003 Lacewood and #005, the Dollar Sign guitar, and a double-neck instrument for Foreigner's Ed Gagliardi. He also built basses for Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead and for Pete Sears (Jefferson Starship), and a later bass associated with Oteil Burbridge that reprises the Wolf design. Irwin instruments are characterized by hand-carved neck-through construction, highly figured woods, and detailed shell inlays.

Original Irwin guitars rarely change hands, and when they do they command landmark prices: the Wolf and Tiger both sold at auction for well into six and seven figures after a legal settlement with the Garcia estate. Irwin Guitars continues to trade on that legacy through a small output of new instruments and documentation of the historical builds.
