John Birch Guitars is a British custom guitar maker founded in 1970 by luthier John Birch (1922–2000), who set up his original workshop in Rubery, Birmingham alongside John Diggins and Arthur Baker. The shop became known for forward-thinking electric guitar construction, with features like 24-fret neck-through bodies, stainless steel hardware, and Birch's own high-output pickups built around large cobalt steel magnets — including the Biflux and Magnum designs with multiple adjustable pole pieces. The original workshop closed in 1977, and the brand was relaunched in 1993 in Nottingham with John Carling, who continued building under the John Birch Guitars UK name after Birch's death in 2000.
The company's customer list from its first decade reads as a roll call of British rock and metal: Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath, Brian May of Queen, Dave Hill and Jim Lea of Slade, Manny Charlton of Nazareth, and Roy Orbison all played Birch instruments or had guitars modified by the workshop. Iommi in particular is closely associated with Birch-built pickups and modified SGs from the era.
The brand returned to Birmingham in 2021 under owner Peter Francis, with original co-founder John Diggins and his sons Michael and Andrew leading the build side. The catalog includes the John Birch Standard electric and bass, the Heritage J1, and a pickup line, all built to order in small numbers.
John Birch has 3 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitars, Solid Body Electric Guitars, and Electric Basses. Their gear is featured by 3 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock. Notable users include Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Brian May.
