José Luis Romanillos Vega (1932–2022) was a Spanish luthier widely regarded as one of the most influential classical guitar makers of the twentieth century. Born in Madrid, he apprenticed in carpentry as a teenager before relocating to England, where he built his first guitar in London in 1961. After being encouraged by guitarist Julian Bream, he established a workshop at East End Farm in Semley, Wiltshire in 1970, and later moved to his own shop at "Madrigal" in Semley in 1978.
Romanillos devoted his career to the study of Antonio de Torres and the pursuit of what he called the "Spanish sound" — a tonal ideal characterized by clarity of note production, harmonic balance, and projection. His instruments are prized for their elegant aesthetics and refined voicing, and Julian Bream was among the prominent concert artists to perform on his guitars. In 2002, Romanillos and his wife Marian published The Vihuela de Mano and the Spanish Guitar, a landmark biographical dictionary of Spanish stringed-instrument makers.
In 1995 Romanillos retired from active building, leaving the English workshop in the hands of his youngest son Liam, who had apprenticed with him since 1982 and continues to build classical guitars in Dorset under the Romanillos name. Father-and-son collaborations from the workshop, often labeled "Liam & José Luis Romanillos," remain among the most sought-after classical guitars on the secondary market.
