Klira was a German string instrument manufacturer founded in 1887 by Johannes Klier in Schönbach (now Luby u Chebu in the Czech Republic). The company began as a violin maker and was taken over by Johannes's son Otto Josef Klier in 1914. Following World War II, the Klier family relocated the operation to Franconia in Bavaria, West Germany, settling first in Erlangen and then permanently in Bubenreuth in 1950, joining the cluster of luthiers who had emigrated from Schönbach to the region.
From the 1950s onward, Klira expanded beyond violins into acoustic and electric guitars and basses, becoming one of the largest guitar manufacturers in West Germany. At its peak the factory produced around 40,000 guitars a year alongside roughly half as many violins, and exported widely. The Triumphator line — sold in archtop, flat-top, electric, and 12-string variants — is the model most commonly associated with the brand, and a portion of Klira output was rebadged for German mail-order houses under the Triumphator name. Other production included thinline semi-hollow electrics and a range of solid-body electrics and basses.
Klira instruments from the 1950s and 1960s are now collected as examples of postwar German lutherie, valued for their distinctive aesthetics, archtop construction, and tone. The legal entity Otto Johs. Klier GmbH ceased operations in 1982.
