Founded in 1995 by Alvin "Pops" Okami in Honolulu, Hawaii, KoAloha is a family-run ukulele maker known for handcrafted instruments and a distinctive sound. The company name derives from the Hawaiian words "kou aloha," meaning "your love," while also referencing koa, the native Hawaiian tonewood central to their instruments. Okami originally ran a plastics factory before pivoting to building miniature playable ukuleles, eventually scaling up to full-size instruments. The business is run by the Okami family, with sons Alan and Paul (the company's master luthier) helping lead operations from their factory in the Kaka'ako neighborhood of Honolulu.
KoAloha ukuleles are recognized by their signature musubi-shaped soundhole and crown headstock design. The flagship Koa Series features solid Hawaiian koa bodies and is available in soprano, pineapple soprano, concert, and tenor sizes, including long-neck and slimline variants. The Royal Pikake line adds a satin finish, ebony headstock veneer, and crown fretboard inlays for a more refined aesthetic. The Mango Series uses mango wood for a bolder, sweeter tone. For more accessible price points, the Opio Series uses solid Asian acacia and is produced in KoAloha's own Thailand factory, while the KoAlana Series offers laminated trembesi instruments built in Indonesia.
KoAloha is considered one of the "Big Four" Hawaiian ukulele makers alongside Kamaka, Kanile'a, and Ko'olau. Professional ukulele players associated with the brand include Herb Ohta Jr., Daniel Ho, Brittni Paiva, and Raiatea Helm. The company offers factory tours at their Honolulu workshop and maintains an authorized dealer network worldwide.
