La Baye was a short-lived American electric guitar brand founded by Dan Helland, a guitarist and guitar teacher from Green Bay, Wisconsin. The name was a nod to the city where Helland sold the instruments. Around 1965, while working at the Henri's Music store chain, Helland developed the concept for an instrument that took the cynical idea of an electric guitar being "just a 2x4 with a neck attached" literally. He partnered with the Holman-Woodell factory in Neodesha, Kansas — the same plant that produced early Wurlitzer electric guitars — to build a small run in 1967.
The lineup centered on the radical 2x4 model, a slab-bodied solidbody styled after a piece of construction lumber, offered in three configurations: the Six (six-string), the Twelve (twelve-string), and the Four (bass). Approximately 45 instruments were built in total. La Baye debuted the line at the summer NAMM show in Chicago in 1967, where it generated no orders, and the company folded shortly afterward.
The 2x4 found a second life through Bob Mothersbaugh of Devo, who began playing an original example around 1977 and made it a visual signature of the band. Eastwood Guitars later licensed the design and produced the La Baye 2x4 DEVO Signature reissue, reintroducing the model to a wider audience and cementing the original's status as a sought-after oddball collectible.
