Lafayette Radio Electronics Corporation was an American electronics retailer and house brand based in Syosset, New York, active from the early 1930s through the early 1980s. Best known for its mail-order catalogs and East Coast retail stores, Lafayette sold a sweeping range of consumer and pro audio equipment, ham radio gear, hi-fi components, and musical instruments under its own name. Most of its 1960s-era musical instruments and amplifiers were sourced from Japanese manufacturers — guitars were often built by Guyatone and Teisco, while amplifiers shared factories and designs with Univox-branded products of the same period.
The Lafayette music line included tube and solid-state guitar and bass amplifiers, electric and acoustic guitars, ukuleles, dynamic and ribbon microphones, and a catalog of effects. The brand's effects pedals and units — including the Echo-Verb and Echo Verb II tape/spring reverbs, Roto-Vibe modulation units, and fuzz boxes — are the items most actively traded on the vintage market today. Many of these effects shared circuitry and tooling with units sold under Univox and Shin-ei labels.
Lafayette's catalog operation wound down in the early 1980s, and the brand has not produced new gear since. Its 1960s tube combos and effects retain a following among collectors of Japanese-made vintage gear, and units regularly appear on Reverb, eBay, and through specialty vintage dealers.
