Latronic was a British music technology company known for the Notron, an idiosyncratic MIDI step sequencer that earned a cult following among electronic musicians. Designed by Gerard Campbell with software by Dave Spowage of Concourse Systems and original bodywork by Martyn Seiles, the Notron paired a dense grid of illuminated step buttons with real-time performance controls for pitch bend, modulation, chord generation, strums, delays, and step reversals across four independent sequence rows of up to sixteen steps each.
Two hardware revisions were released: the Mk1, produced from 1996 to 1998, and the slimmer blue Mk2, which followed until around 2001. Roughly one hundred units of each were built, making original hardware scarce on the used market. A software version of the Notron was later released in 2006. The instrument won a Millennium Award from the UK Design Council in 1999 and was exhibited at the Millennium Dome in 2000.
The Notron developed a reputation as a sequencing tool for coaxing unexpected patterns out of external synthesizers, and has been associated with artists including Björk, The Orb, Goldie, Peter Gabriel, Howie B, Claude Young, and Paula Temple.
