Lyon & Healy is a Chicago-based harp maker founded in 1864 by George W. Lyon and Patrick J. Healy, who were originally sent west by Boston music publisher Oliver Ditson to open a sheet music shop. The company expanded into instrument manufacturing and built its first pedal harp in 1889, an instrument that established the firm as one of the foremost harp builders in the world. Construction takes place at the company's facility on North Ogden Avenue in Chicago, where craftspeople are trained through an internal apprenticeship program.
The catalog spans concert pedal harps, lever harps, and electric models. Iconic instruments include the ornately carved Style 23, introduced in 1890 and often described as the most recognizable harp design ever made; the Art Deco Salzedo Model, developed in 1928 in collaboration with harpist Carlos Salzedo; and the Style 30, a more architectural pedal harp introduced in 1959. The Folk Harp, launched in 1985, was among the first small non-pedal harps produced in significant numbers, and the 16-pound Silhouette electric lever harp arrived in 2003. Smaller-bodied models such as the Chicago and Prelude lines extend the range to students and travelers.
Lyon & Healy harps have been played by generations of leading harpists, from early endorsers like Charles Oberthür and John Cheshire to twentieth-century figures such as Mildred Dilling and Carlos Salzedo. The company's Chicago headquarters also houses Lyon & Healy Hall, a concert venue that hosts performances and competitions for the international harp community.
