Nanoloop is an electronic music platform created by Hamburg-based artist and developer Oliver Wittchow, who began the project in 1997 while studying at the University of Fine Arts of Hamburg. The original software, a minimalist step sequencer and synthesizer, was first released as a Game Boy cartridge in the late 1990s and helped catalyze the chiptune scene by giving musicians direct control of the handheld's sound chip through a stripped-down 4x4 grid interface.
The lineup expanded to Nanoloop 2 for Game Boy Advance, which added software synthesis and sampling, and later Nanoloop Mono, a cartridge that turns the original Game Boy into an analog monosynth using its link port for analog audio output. Mobile versions of Nanoloop are available for iOS and Android, carrying the same grid-based sequencing approach into a touchscreen environment with sampling and synthesis. Nanoloop 3 is a standalone handheld groovebox funded via Kickstarter, with a gamepad-style interface, LED display, and a sound engine combining FM, square-wave oscillators, noise, and an analog filter.
Nanoloop's design philosophy favors immediacy and constraint over feature depth, and the products are sold direct from the developer rather than through traditional music retail. The platform has a long-running following in the chipmusic and lo-fi electronic communities.
