NIH-plug is an open-source audio plugin framework written in Rust, created and maintained by Dutch developer Robbert van der Helm. The framework is API-agnostic and can export plugins in both VST3 and CLAP formats, with adapters for Rust GUI libraries such as egui, iced, and VIZIA. It takes a declarative approach to plugin development, handling parameter management, audio buffer iteration, and cross-platform bundling so developers can focus on DSP code.
Alongside the framework itself, the project ships a small collection of free plugins that have gained attention in the producer community. These include Spectral Compressor (a multiband dynamic processor), Diopser (a phase rotation effect similar in concept to Kilohearts Disperser), Crisp (bass enhancement), Crossover (a multiband signal splitter), Loudness War Winner, Puberty Simulator, Safety Limiter, Soft Vacuum (a distortion with oversampling), and Buffr Glitch (a MIDI-triggered buffer repeat). The plugins are distributed free of charge and are popular among users of Linux DAWs and those exploring CLAP-format workflows.
The framework code is released under the ISC license, while the VST3 bindings fall under GPLv3. NIH-plug has become a reference point for Rust-based audio development and is often discussed in communities focused on open-source music software.
