Onkyo is a Japanese consumer electronics manufacturer founded in 1946 by Takeshi Godai in Osaka, originally as Osaka Denki Onkyo Company. The name, meaning "sound harmony" in Japanese, reflects the founder's focus on precision audio engineering. Godai, who previously worked at Matsushita Electric (now Panasonic), built the company around home audio componentry, with R&D rooted in Osaka.

The brand is best known for home cinema and hi-fi equipment, particularly its AV receivers, stereo receivers, integrated amplifiers, CD players, and loudspeakers. The Integra line, introduced in 1969, established Onkyo as a serious contender in high-fidelity amplification, and in 1993 the company launched one of the first THX-certified consumer AV receivers. Its catalog also spans headphones, network audio players, and compact desktop systems.

Within the music-gear world, Onkyo equipment is more commonly seen on the listening and playback side than in signal chains, though its receivers, speakers, and headphones turn up in home studios and reference-listening setups where accurate, uncolored reproduction is a priority.
