Orfeus is a Bulgarian guitar maker that emerged during the Communist era, producing electric instruments at a furniture factory in the city of Plovdiv from the late 1960s through the 1970s. With Western instruments largely unavailable in Bulgaria at the time, Orfeus turned out a range of electric guitars, basses, and 12-string variants for the domestic market. Instruments destined for export carried the alternate spelling "Orpheus."
The Hebros is the brand's most recognized model — a semi-hollow body shaped along the lines of a Gibson ES-335, with a flat plywood top and back, a solid pine center block, and a vibrato tailpiece. Hebros guitars are found in twin single-coil and three-pickup configurations, often paired with a four-knob control layout and selector switches. A companion Hebros Bass was built on the same semi-hollow platform, and a Hebros Deluxe variant has also appeared in vintage listings.
Documentation on the company's designers and builders is sparse, and surviving examples vary in pickup style, hardware, and finish. The pickups — handmade with cloth-covered copper windings wrapped around small cylindrical magnets — give the instruments a distinctive lo-fi voice that has drawn interest from players seeking unconventional tones. The guitars surface regularly on the vintage market in Europe and North America, where they are treated more as Cold War curiosities and collector pieces than as mainstream working instruments.
