Playtime Engineering is a San Francisco–based electronic instrument company founded in 2018 by Troy and Kate Sheets. Troy, an electrical engineer with a long Silicon Valley career, began prototyping synthesizers from low-cost chips as an after-hours hobby before turning the project into a business focused on approachable electronic music tools for kids and adults alike.

The company is best known for its Blipblox line of synthesizers, which pair playful, colorful enclosures with genuine synthesis under the hood. The Blipblox SK2 is a toy-grade synth aimed at children as young as three, while the Blipblox After Dark targets older kids and adult hobbyists with a deeper feature set — 16 oscillators, a multi-mode resonant filter, dual envelopes and LFOs, and 5-pin MIDI I/O for integration with keyboards, drum machines, and DAWs. The Blipblox myTRACKS expands the lineup into sampling, sequencing, and drum machine territory.

Industrial design for the Blipblox was developed in collaboration with Axel Hartmann, the designer behind instruments such as the Moog Voyager and the Hartmann Neuron. The After Dark is notable for being certified to international toy safety standards while still functioning as a full-featured MIDI synth, giving the brand a distinctive niche at the intersection of educational toys and hobbyist synthesizers.
