Ribbecke Guitars is the workshop of luthier Tom Ribbecke, who began building and repairing guitars in the San Francisco Bay Area in the early 1970s before relocating his operation to Healdsburg, California. Ribbecke is regarded as one of the leading archtop builders of his generation, known for hand-carved, limited-production instruments with a long commission waiting list.
His best-known innovation is the Halfling, a patented asymmetrical design introduced in 2003 that combines a flat top on the bass side with a carved archtop on the treble side, along with X-bracing intended to improve bass response and feedback rejection. The Halfling was developed in collaboration with bassist Bobby Vega and exists in both guitar and bass forms. Other models from the workshop include the Testadura thinline archtop and various custom steel-string and archtop builds.
In 2004, Ribbecke founded the separate Ribbecke Guitar Corporation to produce Halfling-architecture instruments in a more production-oriented format using CNC-assisted construction with final setup and inspection at the Ribbecke shop, while the private workshop continued to handle one-off commissions and custom archtops.
Ribbecke has 2 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Acoustic & Acoustic-Electric Basses and Acoustic-Electric Guitars. Their gear is featured by 2 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock. Notable users include Jack Casady and Whitfield Crane.
