Rick Kelly is a New York-based luthier who has been building custom electric guitars since the 1970s. He operates Carmine Street Guitars, a small workshop at 42 Carmine Street in Greenwich Village, where he has been based since 1990. Kelly is known for building vintage-style instruments — primarily T-style and other classic-bodied electric guitars — by hand, one at a time, often working alongside his longtime apprentice Cindy Hulej.
What distinguishes Kelly's work is his use of reclaimed old-growth wood salvaged from historic New York City buildings, including church pews, bar tops, floorboards, and roof beams pulled from structures dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. He estimates that the majority of his guitars are built with reclaimed white pine bodies, and he sources tone woods, pickups, and hardware to match a vintage aesthetic and feel. His instruments have been played by Lou Reed, Patti Smith, Bob Dylan, and Robert Quine, among others, and the shop itself was the subject of the documentary film Carmine Street Guitars (2018).
