Rigel Mandolins is the brand of Vermont luthier Pete Langdell, based in Jeffersonville, Vermont. Langdell began building mandolins in the 1960s and spent roughly two decades refining his approach before launching the Rigel line in the late 1980s, with the first prototypes completed in 1990. The company's signature innovation is a construction method that carves the back and sides from a solid block of tonewood using a milling machine, rather than bending thin sides in the traditional manner. Rigel instruments are typically built with Vermont maple for the back, sides, and neck and Vermont spruce for the top.
The Rigel catalog includes a range of acoustic and acoustic-electric mandolins such as the A-Plus, A-Plus Deluxe, G110, CT110, R100, G5, and the Jethro model, along with the semi-hollow E110 electric mandolin fitted with a magnetic pickup. Many models feature Rigel's custom onboard transducer system, and the instruments are known for an aggressive, versatile tone that works across bluegrass, swing, jazz, and jam-band settings.
Rigel mandolins have been played by a number of well-known mandolinists, including Jimmy Gaudreau, Paul Glasse, and Drew Emmitt of Leftover Salmon. Gold Tone became the worldwide distributor of Rigel mandolins in 2009, with Langdell continuing to build the instruments at his Vermont workshop.
