Robert Bouchet (1898–1986) was a French luthier widely regarded as the founder of the modern French school of classical guitar making. Born in Paris, he initially trained as a visual artist and exhibited paintings at the Salon des Tuileries and the Salon d'Automne before turning to lutherie in his late forties. Without formal training, he developed his craft by visiting the workshops of makers such as Julián Gómez Ramírez and built his first instrument in 1946.

Working in the tradition of Antonio de Torres, Bouchet refined the fan-bracing system to produce a more even response across the soundboard, typically using five to seven hand-shaped braces. In the mid-1950s he introduced a transverse brace beneath the bridge that became known as the Bouchet bar, an innovation widely adopted by subsequent luthiers. He produced only 154 instruments over the course of his career, each numbered and signed, and the relative scarcity of his output combined with his influence on later makers has made his guitars among the most collectible classical instruments of the twentieth century.

His workshop attracted many leading concert guitarists of the era, including Ida Presti and Alexandre Lagoya, Emilio Pujol, Oscar Ghiglia, Turibio Santos, Manuel López Ramos, and Julian Bream, who owned three Bouchet guitars and recorded his 1965 album Baroque Guitar on instrument number 103. Bouchet's instruments remain sought after on the vintage market and continue to be referenced through plans and study by contemporary classical guitar builders.
